Assim que saio da casa de Lisboa da ACREDITAR a primeira coisa que me vem à cabeça é que sem dúvida nenhuma que essa é a palavra de ordem: A-CRE-DI-TAR! A energia da Patrícia Pinto (no projecto há 5 anos) é tão positiva e absolutamente contagiante que eu, que também já sou optimista por natureza, saí de lá com o sentimento de que tudo é possível, que o céu é o limite e com um sorriso na cara que permaneceu nas horas que se seguiram! Comecemos então esta viagem pelo nosso desafio e de seguida com um tour pela casa de Lisboa.
IRS E TEATRO SOLIDÁRIO
É quase obrigatório incluir no desafio de Abril o "IRS Solidário", como gosto de lhe chamar. É tão fácil e não custa nada! Para quem nunca experimentou basta preencherem o quadro 11 do modelo 3 do IRS com o NIF da Associação: 503 571 920. Mas o nosso desafio não acaba aqui! Vamos fazer um espectáculo de teatro social que também vai ser solidário e gostávamos de poder contar com a vossa presença. CASA NOVA
"Quer ver a casa?" "Claro!" Esta é a parte das crianças. Brinquedos, casinhas, kits para mascarar, sinto-me em casa neste território. Vamos para o jardim onde estão as ditas casinhas e também há um pequeno canteiro onde as famílias podem plantar o que quiserem. O espaço tem uma sombra que mesmo num dia chuvoso como este, é muito agradável e convida a trazer um livro, ou um chá (ou os dois) e ficar. O ambiente é sereno e confortável.
Do jardim vê-se um edifício antigo. A Patrícia conta-me: "Vimos que iam saindo as pessoas. Depois ficou vago. Ficamos a saber que era da Câmara Municipal de Lisboa (CML). E era uma oportunidade única. Já viu aqui ao lado... Depois da Casa do Porto achamos que tínhamos acabado as obras. Não sabíamos se havíamos de avançar..." Suspense no ar e pergunto: "Compreendo. Compreendo. Mas e então? Perguntaram???"; "Perguntamos! E a CML deixou-os ficar com a casa!" Para que tenham uma noção é o edifício colado ao existente da ACREDITAR. É efectivamente uma oportunidade única! Dou-lhe os parabéns por se aventurarem em mais esta empreitada e também a CML está de Parabéns por esse valioso apoio!
1 FAMÍLIA DE 12 FAMÍLIAS
Seguimos para a sala de refeições e depois para a cozinha que tem duas ilhas. Imediatamente imagino o ambiente e as conversas, alegrias, desabafos que esta cozinha conhecerá. No total existem 12 quartos o que corresponde a 12 famílias. A limpeza, compras e arrumação está a cargo dos utilizadores, existindo uma governanta em cada casa que dá apoio na limpeza. Estas tarefas que muitas vezes podemos achar aborrecidas, se reflectirmos sobre o assunto só o fazemos nas nossas casas. Estas rotinas além de um sentimento de pertença, promovem o conforto e a tranquilidade. Esta será a casa de um conjunto de famílias durante algum tempo. Neste local, e conforme me confirma a Patrícia, reúnem-se famílias que vão criar uma nova família, laços que se criam e perduram por toda a vida. Existe ainda a sala comum, a sala dos adolescentes e a sala dos pais. Cada uma delas com os elementos necessários para que possam ser usadas com todo o conforto. Destas salas pode-se ver o IPO (Instituto Português de Oncologia) o que traz uma sensação de tranquilidade aos pais que estão literalmente a um olhar de distância.
TEMPOS E CASA
As famílias que chegam às casas da Acreditar são sinalizadas pelos Serviços Sociais dos hospitais. Também são estes Serviços que fazem o pedido para apoio financeiro, material e alimentar, consoante as necessidades verificadas. Em termos de tempo, as famílias que vêm de algum local dentro do continente ficam habitualmente 6 a 7 meses; as que vêm dos Açores 9 meses; e as que vêm dos PALOP 2 anos (o protocolo que existe apenas paga uma vez a viagem - ida e volta). Estes números são apenas uma referência que, por razões óbvias, variam de caso para caso, conforme o caso clínico e até ao momento em que os tratamentos ou acompanhamento começam a ficar mais espaçados no tempo o que permite o regresso a casa. Então e a família de origem? - chamemos-lhe assim. Normalmente a Mãe vem com a criança e o Pai mantém o seu trabalho no local de residência, e aguenta "o barco" eventualmente até com os outros filhos do casal, caso hajam mais filhos. Existe uma maior dificuldade em adaptação à nova rotina das pessoas que vivem mais perto. Quem vem de longe, teve necessariamente que fazer toda uma preparação e sabe que a alteração na rotina é garantida.
Em cada quarto existem duas camas e cada uma delas tem mais duas em gaveta por baixo. As toalhas em cimas das camas em forma de flor são um claro sinal de boas vindas e preocupação no acolhimento dos novos residentes que além deste mimo, Mãe e criança, recebem sempre um presente. É feita uma apresentação às famílias, sendo a recepção feita pelas famílias que já estão na casa. Como refere a Patrícia é muito positivo os recém-chegados "beberem dessa força". As televisões estão nas salas e não nos quartos, o que promove a reunião para esse momento de descontracção.
VOLUNTARIADO
Os Serviços Nacionais de Oncologia Pediátrica recebem anualmente 450 novas crianças. Em Lisboa serão cerca de 150. O tratamento pode ser feito em regime de internamento ou em ambulatório, em Hospital de Dia. As crianças do Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa são visitadas durante a semana pelos voluntários da Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro, sendo o fim de semana do pelouro da Acreditar. Os pais e filhos que venceram a batalha desta doença transmitem uma mensagem de força e de esperança a quem utiliza este serviço hospitalar.
NO HOSPITAL
A cada criança é destacado além do médico um enfermeiro de referência. Estes reúnem semanalmente com uma educadora e uma técnica da Acreditar para acompanhar da melhor forma possível cada um dos casos. E sim, leram bem, existente no hospital uma educadora para dar apoio na continuação dos trabalhos da escola durante o período lectivo em que as crianças estão hospitalizadas. Muitas vezes fazem videoconferências no sentido de manter o contacto com colegas e professores. Esta educadora faz também um trabalho de sensibilização junto das escolas na preparação da recepção dos alunos no regresso à escola, promovendo um intercâmbio entre as duas realidades. Existe muitas vezes a dúvida que se se deve fazer, ou não, perguntas. Não existe uma regra mas, como esclarece a Patrícia, "não perguntar pode causar mais estranheza". O apoio na transição mostra-se assim valioso.
IDADE
Quando é que os utentes dos hospitais deixam de poder estar no serviço de pediatria? Em Portugal de 1 até aos 18 anos. A nível europeu começa-se a observar a extensão até aos 24 anos, orientação que a Acreditar também defende e nos explica o porquê. O serviço de pediatria tem um conjunto de regalias que não tem a parte de adultos onde, por exemplo, os quartos são mistos. Além disto na pediatria quer o ambiente, quer os profissionais estão vocacionados para esta faixa etária e as suas características. Os utentes podem ter um cuidador a tempo inteiro, sendo que ele pode inclusivamente dormir consigo no quarto, além de iniciativas que rompem totalmente com a realidade do hospital como os doutores palhaços da Operação Nariz Vermelho, ou a música nos hospitais que contribui muito positivamente para o bem-estar dos utentes.
Temos a sensação que repetimos variadas vezes a palavra família e repetimos mesmo. O foco desta instituição está nas pessoas: crianças, jovens, pais, filhos e filhas, não fosse a sua missão "Tratar a criança ou o jovem com cancro e não só o cancro na criança ou jovem".

As soon as I leave ACREDITAR's (BELIEVE) Lisbon house, the first thing that comes to mind is that no doubt that this is the motto: A-CRE-DI-TAR! The energy of Patrícia Pinto (in the project for 5 years now) is so positive and absolutely contagious that I, also an optimist by nature, left there with the feeling that everything is possible, that the sky is the limit and with a smile on my face that stayed in the hours that followed! Let's begin this journey by our challenge and then with a tour of the Lisbon's house.
SOLIDARY IRS AND THEATER
It is almost mandatory to include the "Solidary IRS" in the April challenge, as I like to call it. It's so easy and it costs nothing! For those who have never tried, just fill out Table 11 of IRS template 3 with the fiscal number of the Association: 503 571 920. But our challenge does not end here! We're doing a social show that's also going to be solidary and we would like to count on your presence. The show will be performed by the theater group "Lupa" ("Magnifying Glass") and will take place at the Hotel Inspira Santa Marta in Lisbon that generously will receive us at its facilities. So on the 18th of May, Friday, at 9.30 pm, being solidary will be going to the theater! Each ticket costs € 12, of that value 50% reverts to ACREDITAR, the other 50% for the actors. NEW HOUSE
"Do you want to see the house?" "Of course!" This is the children's part. Toys, houses, masking kits, I feel at home in this territory. We go to the garden where there are these little houses and there is also a small flowerbed where families can plant whatever they want. The space has a shadow that even on a rainy day like this, is very pleasant and invites to bring a book, or a tea (or both) and stay. The atmosphere is serene and comfortable.
From the garden you can see an old building. Patricia tells me: "We saw people coming out. Then he became vacant. We got to know that it was from the Lisbon City Council (CML). And it was a unique opportunity. It is next door ... After Porto´s house we thought that we had finished the works. We didn't know if we should move forward ... " Suspense in the air and I ask," I understand. I understand. But then? Have you asked ??? "; "We asked! And CML let us stay with the house!" So you understand is the building glued to the existing building of ACREDITAR. It is indeed a unique opportunity! I congratulate them for undertaking this venture and CML also for this valuable support!
1 FAMILY OF 12 FAMILIES
We proceed to the dining room and then to the kitchen which has two islands. Immediately I imagine the atmosphere and the conversations, joys, outbursts that this kitchen knows. In total there are 12 rooms which corresponds to 12 families. The cleaning, shopping and housekeeping is in charge of the users, there is a housekeeper in each house that gives support in cleaning. These tasks that we can often find annoying, if we reflect on the subject we only do it in our houses. These routines, besides a sense of belonging, promote comfort and tranquility. This will be the home of a set of families for some time. In this place, and as Patricia confirms to me, families are coming together and will create a new family, bonds that are created and last for a lifetime. There is also the common room, the adolescent room and the parental room. Each one with the necessary elements so that they can be used with all comfort. From these rooms one can see IPO (Portuguese Oncology Institute) which brings a sense of tranquility to the parents who are literally at a glance away.
TIMES AND HOUSE
Families arriving at Acreditar homes are signaled by the Hospital Social Services. It is also these Services that apply for financial, material and food support, depending on the needs verified. In terms of time, families coming from somewhere within the continent usually stay for 6 to 7 months; those that come from the Azores 9 months; and those that come from PALOP 2 years (the protocol that exists only pays once the trip - round trip). These numbers are just a reference that, for obvious reasons, vary from case to case, depending on the clinical case and up to the time when the treatments or monitoring begin to be more spaced in time which allows the homecoming. So what about the family of origin? - let's call it that. Normally the Mother comes with the child and the Father keeps his work in the place of residence, and holds up "the boat" eventually even with the other children of the couple if there are more children. There is a greater difficulty in adapting to the new routine of the people who live closer. Anyone who comes from a distance has necessarily had to do all the preparation and knows that the change in routine is guaranteed.
In each bedroom there are two beds and each has two more inside a drawer underneath. Towels shaped as flowers on top of beds are a clear sign of welcome and concern in welcoming new residents who, in addition to this treat, Mother and child, always receive a gift. A presentation is made to the families, and the reception is done by the families who are already in the house. As Patricia points out, it is very positive that newcomers "drink from this strength". Televisions are in the living rooms and not in the bedrooms, which promotes the meeting for this moments of relaxation.
VOLUNTEERING
The National Pediatric Oncology Services receive 450 new children each year. In Lisbon there will be around 150. The treatment can be done in an inpatient or outpatient regime, in Day Hospital. The children of the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Lisbon are visited during the week by the volunteers of the Portuguese League Against Cancer, and Acreditar is in charge of the weekend. The parents and children who won the battle of this disease transmit a message of strength and hope to those who use this hospital service.
AT THE HOSPITAL
To each child is assigned besides the doctor, a nurse of reference. They meet weekly with an educator and a Acreditar technique to follow each case in the best possible way. And yes, you've read well, there is an educator in the hospital to support the continuation of school work during the school period in which the children are hospitalized. They often make videoconferences to keep in touch with colleagues and teachers. This educator also works to raise awareness among the schools in the preparation of the reception of students on their return to school, promoting an exchange between the two realities. There is often a question as to whether or not questions should be asked. There is no rule but, as Patricia clarifies, "not asking can cause more strangeness." The support on this transition is very valuable.
AGE
When do hospital users no longer are able to be in the pediatric service? In Portugal from 1 to 18 years. At European level, we begin to observe the extension until the age of 24, an orientation that Acreditar also defends and explains why. The pediatrics service has a set of perks that doesn't exist in the adult service where, for example, the rooms are mixed (men and women). In addition to this in the pediatrics the environment and professionals are focused on this age group and its characteristics. Users can have a full-time caregiver, that can even sleep with the child in the room, as well as initiatives that totally break with the reality of the hospital, such as the Doctor's Clowns in Operation Red Nose, or music in hospitals that contributes very positively to the well-being of the users.
We have the feeling that we have repeated the word family several times and we actually had. The focus of this institution is on people: children, young people, parents, sons and daughters, if it were not their mission to "Treat the child or young person with cancer and not only the cancer in the child or young person."
